New Mass Schedule for CCHS
Charlotte Catholic will now hold all-school Masses on a weekly basis. Masses will typically be held on Wednesdays and will be celebrated by our chaplain Father Torres.
When asked why the shift was made, Father Torres responded “Mass is the most important thing we as Catholics participate in. The reason we have Mass weekly now is so we can more often remind ourselves that we should be living our lives in the context of Jesus’s love and sacrifice for us.” Student Ministry head Ms. Yarussi added, “Mass makes us who we are. It is a privilege to be able to share in mass with our fellow classmates and teachers.”
In addition to the new mass schedule, students will also be expected to wear a Mass uniform this year. When asked about a new uniform for Mass, Father Torres said, “I believe having a uniform for Mass sets a proper disposition that we should have when in God’s presence.” He gave the humorous example “If someone was having dinner with the Pope, I assume that person would take the time to look his or her best.”
The school was fortunate to have the first mass of the year celebrated by new Bishop Michael Martin. While, currently, no further Masses are scheduled with Bishop Martin, Father Torres hopes he will join us again soon. He also said that we will on occasion be joined in Mass by other priests from around the diocese.
On the subject of homilies, Father Torres recognized the potential to give successive homilies with connected meanings during special seasons of the church calendar. He called out Advent and Lent as “lending themselves to a kind of ‘homily series’,” so we can expect some particularly insightful homilies during that period.
To close, Father Torres quoted T.S. Elliot: “In the end is my beginning.” He explained that if there is one message he wants to send to students this year, it is the message of hope and striving for greatness while overcoming the obstacles in our way.
