Mr. Smith and His New Drive

It is with great sadness that Charlotte Catholic announces that Mr Smith, the Senior AP literature teacher has decided to resign starting Friday, April 4th. Mr Smith has worked at Catholic for over three decades and has had a difficult time making this decision. He understands that students may be frustrated given the circumstance, but feels it is what is best for him.

Mr. Smith started playing golf as a child with his grandpapa. Over the years, his once hobby turned into passion and drive. He has continued playing over the years and recently has been shooting in the low 60s.

Mr. Smith mentioned that he “[plays] golf every Wednesday and Friday after teaching” and often brings his wife with him on Sundays. He says that is “a great way to honor [his] late grandfather” while spending time outside with his family. Additionally, he has loved getting to teach his grandchildren about golf. He enjoys “taking them with [his] wife to the golf course and helping them learn the ways of the sport.” Mr. Smith even admits that they each are naturally talented golfers.

Recently, many teachers have decided to leave to pursue other interests. Mrs. High left following the Christmas break to continue her career timing track meets. Additionally, Mrs. Summers is leaving starting March 28th after accepting a new role out of state. With the recent resignations at Catholic, Mr. Smith sees it as “a sign from God” that he should also leave the school to follow his passion.

While it may be a sudden change, students at Charlotte Catholic admit that it is not completely unexpected. Madi Hertzig, a sophomore in Mr. Smith’s journalism class says, “Everyday he practices his golf swings in class.” It is true, Mr. Smith even brings his talents to the classroom.

Often, Mr. Smith will bring out his golf club in class, revealing his true passions for the sport. He says, “It is a great way to clear my mind.” Swinging his golf club allows him to contemplate the deeper meanings of a student's question.

Although Mr. Smith has not publicly released his intentions to resign from the school to go professional, families at Charlotte Catholic can expect an email in the upcoming week. Mr. Smith knows that this transition will be hard for students and promises to provide support for them through this change.
