Forget the Freshmen

For the 2024-2025 school year, Charlotte Catholic welcomed over 400 freshmen, making this year’s student body the largest in CCHS history. The increase in students coupled with budget reductions force the school to make cuts to the yearbook. Due to the limited room, freshmen will not be featured in the yearbook.

The school photos for each class usually make up over ten pages of the yearbook. Cutting freshmen pictures from the yearbook will free up some much needed space to fit in all of the important school events, sports teams, and clubs.

For any freshmen on sports teams or in clubs, they will be mentioned in the roster and featured in the group picture. However, any special quotes or solo pictures will come from sophomores, juniors, or seniors.

Yearbook teacher Mrs. Simpson said, “The school pictures take up room where we could put interesting spreads instead. No one will miss the freshmen much anyway.” Editor-in-chief Soleil Demetry agrees, saying that the yearbook staff unanimously decided to get rid of the freshmen. She said, “Everyone was excited because it means a lot less work for us.”

Numerous upperclassmen share the sentiment that underclassmen deserve less spots in the yearbook. Junior Sophia Wharton said, “We have seniority. The freshmen don’t deserve spots in the yearbook until they prove they deserve it.”

While some freshmen and their parents are not happy about the change, the school remains firm in its decision. Administration says they will need to adjust to the change. Nevertheless, numerous freshmen have voiced their complaints. Freshman Evan Miller says, “Father will sue the school if I’m not in the yearbook.”

With the money that the school will save by excluding freshmen from the yearbook, the school plans to create a special cafeteria for the newly-implemented senior breakfasts. The cafeteria will have one big table that will encourage bonding among the senior class. Mr. Conrad says, “This change will allow us to celebrate our seniors. It will also motivate freshmen to not get expelled so they can eventually make it in the yearbook and have senior breakfasts.”

Mrs. Simpson hopes that excluding freshmen pictures from the yearbook will teach the newcomers that they cannot take anything for granted.
