Field Day Fun

Charlotte Catholic recently hosted the 5th grade field day on Friday, March 28. Students from St. Matthew’s, St. Patrick’s, St. Ann’s, and Our Lady of the Assumption came together to participate in this fun-filled day.

This annual event supervised by Ms. Yarussi, Mr. Lee, Coach Chuttey, and Coach Christmas has been a longstanding tradition at Charlotte Catholic. The 5th grade field day is full of games, music, and friendship that create lasting memories among the students.

Excited grade-schoolers arrived at Charlotte Catholic around 9 am by bus. They began field day with a mass celebrated by Father Torres. Ms. Yarussi felt that beginning the day with mass would be a good way for the students to share the Eucharist and affirm the mission of all the participating schools.

After mass, students were called out by group number and greeted by their group leaders. Each group had a mix of students from all four schools so they could connect with several new people.

One of the first things each group leader did was break the ice with different games and questions. Students often have trouble introducing themselves to people they aren’t familiar with. Participating in ice-breakers at the beginning of the day helped them become more comfortable with each other.

Field day activities consisted of 30 stations with games inside the gym and on the field where the 5th graders were able to socialize with those inside and outside of their group. Students rotated from each station with 8 minute intervals from 10:15am-12:15pm. Group and game leaders were also able to make connections with the students as they enjoyed and participated in the activities with them.

Although there were 30 activities for the students to participate in, each group got to only about seven of the stations. The most popular activities included Tug-of-War, Four Square, Knockout, and Crab Walk Soccer. Students had the most fun with their group at these stations because they were more competitive with one another.

At 12:15pm students finished up their last activity with their group and had lunch with their classmates. They were surprised with popsicles and enjoyed this time before the day ended.

Throughout the day, music was played over the speakers to enhance the experience and entertain the participants. A fan favorite of the songs was “Fein,” which prompted most of the students to run up to the announcer’s box and jump up and down chanting “Fein” in unison.

Overall, the 5th graders enjoyed this time with one another and the fifth-grade field day continues to be a favorite annual event.
