Sophomore Starters Lift Cougars to First Win
Charlotte Catholic began their football season opener at home on August 23, 7 pm. With a fresh roster and high expectations, the team has high hopes for this upcoming season. Charlotte Catholic defeated South Meck 26-10 to start off the season.
With the loss of the seniors last year, certain sophomores are expected to help fill the gaps. One of these Sophomores is cornerback Charles Patrick. Playing on varsity as a sophomore can be very intimidating but Charles said “it’s definitely a jump from JV, but it felt great having such a supportive community behind me and the team.”
Charles started and performed well with five tackles. He said, “It feels great knowing that I really contributed to our win.” The football team needed people to step up and play a role, and that is exactly what Charles did.
Nerves play a big role in any game, especially a season opener at home playing varsity for the first time. Charles believes that “Once you get that first hit everything goes away.”
Charles is just one of many sophomores who played their part in Catholics big win. Other sophomores include Sam Kaupp, Alex Broome, John Hucko, Thomas Spicer, Thomas Mckillop, William Johnson, Zachary Ruminski, Aiden Flynn, and Lucas Kalons. Aiden, Alex, Charles, and William are all starters for the Cougars. Charlotte Catholic is one of the youngest teams in the conference due to the amount of underclassmen they have on the field.
However, sophomores do not make up the entire team and it took everyone to win. Senior quarterback Charlie Smith had two passing touchdowns and junior Garret Nowlan had a rushing touchdown.
After a tough 9-24 loss against our rival, Providence Day, Charlotte Catholic prepares for their next game at Crest High in Shelby, North Carolina.
