CCHS Tries Tasty Treats

CCHS held its second annual Latino Flavor Tasting Table on October 16 during break. The tasting table highlighted the positive impact of CCHS’ growing Latino community through the sharing of traditional Latin American food.

The Spanish Club, Spanish Honor Society, and Mrs. Palomino’s Honors Latin American Influence class sponsored the event. Since food is an essential element of culture, having the opportunity to taste Latin dishes prepared by CCHS’ own families fosters both awareness and appreciation of the school’s diversity. They are proud to present this display of Latin culture to the entire student body.

Senior Gabe Smith, who serves as president of the Spanish Club, enjoyed participating in this event. He wants his fellow students to realize “the positive impact of having many different students come in and share the hispanic culture through food.” Gabe also enjoyed working at the table and explaining different foods to people. He loved seeing the excitement and enthusiasm surrounding this event and his culture.

Members of the Spanish Club and the Spanish Honor Society curated various treats originating from Latin America. Some Latin food items that students made for this event include tres leches, Mexican wedding cookies, chocolate flan, arroz con leche, and alfajor.

Students had the opportunity to try any of these treats during break for free. Sophomore Cailyn D’Onofrio appreciated “the opportunity to try new foods that [she] had never tried before and connect Latino culture to what [she] is learning in Spanish class.” She especially enjoyed the Mexican wedding cookies, citing them as some of the best cookies she has ever had.

Junior Bella Valkovschi, another student studying Spanish, emphasized how “glad [she] was to learn about Latino culture outside of the classroom.” The tres leches prevailed as her favorite treat. Bella said she would love to help run the tasting table next year.

Overall, students feel that Latino Flavor Tasting Table celebrates the richness of Charlotte Catholic’s multicultural community and the joy of coming together through shared experiences. The table’s sponsors said they look forward to sharing Latino culture with all of CCHS again in the future.
