CCHS Fockey State Runner-Up in Successful Season
After a win against Chapel Hill High School on October 29, Charlotte Catholic’s varsity field hockey team headed to states. The team boasted an impressive 15-3 regular season record.
Senior captain Julia Williams, who has been playing field hockey for Charlotte Catholic since her freshman year, attributes the team’s success to its chemistry. Julia says the team's dynamic is unmatched because of “countless hours on and off the field spent together.”
Having powered through a longer season than most of their opponents, the girls have faced additional challenges in keeping up with their academic responsibilities. When asked how they stay on top of schoolwork when traveling for games, all the girls said they stay in constant communication with teachers. Julia laughed as she pointed out that “at every pre-game meal we have a study session. All of us sit in silence after our meal for as long as we can, getting work done.”
The team's end goal has always been to win the state championship. In a highly competitive Southwestern 4A division, Charlotte Catholic has dominated since switching into the 4A division in 2020.
In one of its last conference games against Weddington, the team celebrated senior night for the three captains. The celebration, Julia states, made her “feel bittersweet because [she does] not want the season to end and [is] having so much fun right now.” She is grateful for all that field hockey has given her but she says that she is “so sad that [she] will never get the opportunity to play with these girls again.” After finishing first in conference after their regular season, Charlotte Catholic was placed as the 7th seed in the NCHSAA state tournament and worked their way up to the state championship.
After a hard-fought battle, the team placed second against Cardinal Gibbons on November 2. The score was 3-1. Julia said, “I'm proud of the girls and their performance this season.” Catholic’s field hockey team embodies Charlotte Catholic’s core values of dedication and passion, which is why their season was so successful.
