Eight games into the 2024-2025 season, the girls varsity soccer team remains undefeated. This season the team flaunts a young lineup with a bunch of fresh faces which will surely make them fun to watch.
Last season, the girls’ playoff run ended in the 4th round exit after a 1-2 loss against Asheville High School. This year, they aim to win their conference and push further into the playoffs than they did last year. Eight games into the season, the girls have a record of 7-0-1 and are tied for first in their conference.
The team this year is remarkably young: 13 out of the 25 girls are underclassmen. When asked about the new players and their impact on the team, forward Junior Marguerite McPhillips said, “We have definitely improved this season, especially with the addition of the new freshmen whose technical abilities are far better than a majority of the team’s last year.”
The team captains are junior Mary Martin Spinner and seniors Morgan Child, Brooke Gaertig, and Jordyn Miller. Jordyn leads the team with eight goals and is committed to playing soccer at Tufts University in Massachusetts.
The upperclassmen have worked hard to create a very positive and energetic attitude this season. Even after a 0-0 tie against South Meck, Marguerite remarked, “Our energy is where it needs to be for this being our first real game of the season. I think we can definitely improve on team chemistry but that can only get better.”
Sophomore, Savanna Leckner is definitely a player to watch. She led the team in goals last season, bagging 28 in her freshman year. This season, she said that she wants to score more goals, improve her skills, and develop a stronger bond between her coaches and fellow teammates.
Head Coach Gary Hoilett is proud of the team’s successful start to the season. “The team has been working hard and has created a competitive environment,” he said. “We move the ball well and create chances. I’m confident that we will make a deep run in the playoffs.” The girls play their next game against Butler on Tuesday, March 18th.
