Seniors Say Farewell to CYO
The InterFaith Basketball League season has come and gone. Scores of CCHS students participate in Catholic Youth Organization by joining their parish’s team. This recreational basketball league welcomes players of all skill levels. All the parish teams form friendly rivalries against their opponents within the Catholic parishes and other religious organizations. As the final championship game approached only two senior girls and boys teams were left standing.
In the senior girls championship game, St. Gabe’s K9’s and St. Gabe’s Walsh went head-to-head. Both teams fought hard till the end where team K9’s won, 32-28. The K9’s, with Peter Grant as coach, were now the top dogs. Coach Grant and players were ecstatic over this long awaited redemption. Senior Ella Dixon revealed the team struggled last year, only winning one game all season. Ella said, “The random backwards shots and chaos on the court led to an eventful season.”
Students return every year because of the relationships they built as members of a team. The K9’s had their last run and Ella expressed her sadness that “this is my last year on the team and playing with these girls.” No matter the outcome of the game, the girls of St. Gabe’s K9’s had an unforgettable season. Finishing their last season together as champions was one for the books. Ella described her season as “an overall great time that everyone enjoyed and treasures.”
The senior boys St. Gabe’s Brewer went up against St. Matt’s McAllister at the finals. The game ended with a score of 62-42. Team Brewer did not foresee a 20 point win. Senior Frank Brewer said, “Mid-game we got hot and ended up pulling off a win.” The win was a great ending to their senior season. Overall, Team Brewer had a good run for their senior season ending with a 4-4 regular season record and as league champions.
The CYO basketball league each year generates a high energy, competitive atmosphere. CCHS seniors expect next year's senior teams to continue entertaining their fans. The St. Gabe’s senior champions have high expectations for next year's players. They hope the next senior teams will defend their championship title.
