Men's Basketball Season Kicks Off

The 2024-25 Charlotte Catholic basketball season has begun. Tryouts took place on October 30 and 31, and the team’s roster is set as preseason comes to a close. With a new season comes new players, a new schedule, and new expectations. Senior and starting center Chris Eagan and assistant coach Sergio Asaro provided some thoughts on the team’s upcoming season.

One constant on every sports team is the introduction of new players every year. Coach Asaro believes the team’s makeup is perfect: “The roster is a nice mix of returners and newcomers. We have guys who started games for us last year: Chris Eagan, Noah Noch, Joseph Kapsiak, Cade Pringle, Aidan Brady, J.R. Gregory and new members King Rhodes, Jack Seigel, Mack Jordan who we think are going to add a lot.”

The team ended last season with a 16-10 record, one that the team hopes to improve upon this season. Chris holds his team in high regard, and his expectation for the season “is to win the conference then go on to win a 4A state championship.” Such goals won’t come about easily, however, he believes that, “We have got to play for each other, that's it. Everything else will happen naturally.” Coach Asaro shares similar goals. He said, “Our expectation is to overachieve. We coaches are confident that we have a group that can win a lot of games.”

In terms of winning the conference, Coach Asaro believes that they have a good chance. He said, “It’s a pretty even field. I think we should be right up at the top.” He thinks their strength this year is going to be getting “easy points.” They plan to be much faster than last year, which they hope will result in more fast break points and offensive putbacks on the glass.

All in all, the basketball season is looking very promising. The Cougars beat Ardrey Kell 82-77 in their home opener on November 19 and will face Cannon on November 23.
