Field Hockey Seniors Shine at Keffer Stadium

CCHS’ field hockey season came to a bittersweet close after an exciting senior night and playoff run. Their overall record was 12-5, and they were number one in the conference. On October 26th, the field hockey team defeated the Weddington Warriors 4-0 at Keffer Stadium. Not only was this an important conference game but also Senior Night.

Senior Lauren Proicou likes how Senior Night brings the whole team together, which is especially important just before playoffs. From this season, she adds, “The team dinners are a great way to get hype before the game and help each other with homework.” This year, she looked forward to having the players run out onto the field with posters and surround each senior. She hopes to play field hockey at the collegiate level, but is not yet committed to a school.

Senior Ali Hoefling was also excited for the big night, especially seeing the JV perform their signature dance. This year the team beat rivals Country Day, Charlotte Latin, and Providence Day, all highlight games for Ali. Another fun memory from this season was the team’s alternative swim practice. Her favorite Senior Night tradition was enjoying the nice pre-game dinner with the team and parents. Ali is still undecided on college plans but is excited for the future.

Haskell. She was looking forward to playoffs and the practices that came with it. It was the culmination of the team’s hard work. Her favorite Senior Night tradition is capping off the night with the JV girls’ dance at center field. She recently committed to play for Sewanee University.

Senior Kate McArdle loved getting to have all her younger teammates run out onto the field as her name got called. Kate is captain of the team along with Ali, and Molly who led the team during playoffs. Her favorite part of this season were the early morning summer practices. “I loved them because no one is stressed out about school yet” she says.

Senior Night is a wonderful way for seniors to celebrate all their high school achievements, especially in their sport. Coach Sheila Baker expressed her pride. “This Senior Class is extremely talented both on and off the field. They have created a supportive atmosphere that is the basis for the success of this team. Each day they exemplify commitment, caring and positivity,” she commented.

The team made it to the second round of playoffs but lost 1-2 to Cardinal Gibbons in a hard-fought game. The team, especially the seniors, will cherish the time they had together, having these special memories from Senior Night.
