On November 8th, the best of Charlotte Catholic athletics gathered in the Fine Arts Center lobby to sign letters of intent to play their sport on the college level. Fifteen Cougar athletes participated in the event.
The athletes gathered at the stairs leading to the Fine Arts Center lobby to take pictures before the break frenzy ensued. A cheery, light-hearted air filled the space, as athletes conversed among themselves and the realization that their hard work paid off.
“I’ve worked hard throughout my life to get to the point I am today,” and “Today is a rewarding experience, for sure,” said senior Abby Druhan, who committed to swim for the University of Pennsylvania.
At the beginning of break, students and faculty flooded the Fine Arts Center lobby. The athletes positioned themselves at their respective desks, each adorned according to their chosen university and topped with baked goods and other treats. Athletic director Coach Christmas gave a speech that best captured the significance of the event.
Coach Christmas said “Right now, you are signing with your brothers and your sisters. You guys are what make Charlotte Catholic great… When you guys go to that next level, you have everyone here.” After his speech, students put ink to paper before an uproar from parents, teachers, and a noticeable influx of students who appeared in support of their friends.
For Mark McMahon, signing to play lacrosse at St. Bonaventure, the event was special. “The ceremony was great. It was awesome to have my friends and family gathered around me for a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
A total of 15 student-athletes signed a letter of intent:
