Charlotte Catholic’s Poetry Club seeks to prove that poetry can be fun for all. The club utilizes fun prompts and a casual, friendly environment to ensure that all of its members can enjoy themselves.
The president of the club, senior Grace Derrico, shares why it is a great fit for all. “A lot of people are intimidated by poetry and can only think about it in the context of English class, which usually isn’t a very positive association,” Grace said. “But it’s not nearly as scary as it’s made out to be!” The Poetry Club is open to students of all skill levels. Grace especially loves to see new members, saying, “A lot of them initially doubt themselves, having never written a single poem before, but the works they come up with are incredibly imaginative and clever.”
The Poetry Club meets every other month. A typical meeting begins with Grace choosing a prompt for everyone to work with. Prompt themes are usually inspired by the current month, such as Halloween odes, fall haikus, summer sonnets. Afterwards, members begin working on their poems, either individually or in small groups. Meetings conclude with optional readings of their works.
Poetry offers endless possibilities to express yourself in creative ways. Grace says that her favorite poetry is free verse. “It’s a style that doesn’t require any specific structure, so it sounds very natural, as if you’re listening into someone’s thoughts,” she said. “Reading free verse always feels both personal and touching.”
So why should you join the poetry club? Well according to Grace, “To try something new! Even if you don’t think you’ll enjoy it, you should at least give it a chance, and there’s no better place to do that than our club.”
