Teachers Reveal Celebrity Crushes
Valentine's Day approaches fast, bringing candies, love letters, rom-coms, and pink and red decorations. With love lingering in the air, secret crushes are revealed. Most everyone has had a celebrity crush at some point, although they may change through the years. A handful of Charlotte Catholic teachers recounted their celebrity crushes from their high school and college years.
Starting off, Mrs. Friedman claimed that during her high school years there was a “slim selection,” due to the “weird middle years of the disco era.” Throughout college she loved coming-of-age films, more specifically The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. She favored them, because her celebrity crush Anthony Michael Hall starred in both. Mrs. Friedman explained that during the 80’s majority of college girls' celebrity crushes focused on the “Brat Pack,” a group of young actors who appeared together in numerous 1980s coming-of-age and RomCom films. She added that, “over the years my most consistent celebrity crush was Rob Lowe.” At the time Rob Lowe had recently starred in Oxford Blues and The Outsiders and was a Brat Pack regular. Truth be told, he aged like fine wine and remains the celebrity crush of many today.
Mrs. Cusack related vivid descriptions from the 80’s that influenced her celebrity crushes. She describes her high school years as the time of loud hair, obnoxiously rolled pants, super-sized belts, striking blue eyeshadow and eyeliner. The 80’s were a prime time for blockbuster films and the “Brat Pack” actors. Michael Schoeffling, who starred alongside Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles, was everyone's dream guy in the film, as well as, Mrs. Cusack’s celebrity crush. Moving to college, she became enamored of Kevin Costner. Smitten after seeing him star in Bull Durham, she proceeded to adorn her dorm walls with movie posters.
Mrs. Waldron said Tom Cruise was her celebrity crush in high school. He was best known for his lead role in Top Gun. Later in college she fell for the young Brad Pitt. She admitted her crush developed after seeing him in Fight Club and Ocean’s Eleven.
Mrs. Kohn’s celebrity crushes were members of her all time favorite band Duran Duran. They were a group of young, talented and attractive guys who captured her attention in high school. Duran Duran is a British band from Birmingham, England. As an infatuated teenager she was head over heels for two of the band members John and Roger Taylor.
The band rose to fame in the early 1980’s, where they were considered trend setters of music videos and graphics. Mrs. Kohn said, “throughout their performance screens would play complimentary clips.” Mrs. Kohn remembers seeing their videos on MTV. Mrs. Kohn describes them as “a new wave of rock.” Years after college Mrs. Kohn attended one of their concerts, and plans to see them again. It is safe to say her celebrity crush was a lasting one.
Mr. Panther’s celebrity crush in high school and college was Tiffani Amber Thiessen. He referred to her as the “it girl” every guy had a crush on. Tiffani being the same age made her a more realistic crush. She became famous from “Saved by the Bell,” where she played Kelly Kapowski. “Everyone loved and knew her from that star role,” said Mr. Panther. In college he watched her in the hit show “ 90210.”
It seems every generation has its share of handsome, beautiful celebrities who capture for a time the hearts of their fans.
