Charlotte Catholic administration has announced its plan to start making students come in for Saturday school if they have too many unexcused absences for the 2026-2027 school year. This will be an alternative to the prior method of makeup hours.
Students who qualify for Saturday school have at least four absences or eight tardies during one quarter. Additionally, students who receive in-school suspension will also have to come in on a Saturday as a consequence for their actions.
If a student meets the requirements for Saturday school, the Dean of Students will give that student a slip that explains the reason they will have to come in on Saturday as well as the date. That slip will then have to be signed by a parent or guardian and given back to the administration on the day of the student’s makeup.
What the student is there for will decide what class they will be put into, with each class headed by a different administrator. Saturday school will begin at the regular time with the tardy bell ringing at 7:40. If a student is tardy to Saturday school an additional detention will be given, and if they are absent disciplinary action will be taken.

Students who are there for unexcused absences will spend their day learning the material and completing all the in-class assignments that they had missed. Students who have multiple tardies during the quarter will also complete assignments that they missed in their first few periods and then have a study hall if they finish early. All students must stay at school for at least three hours before they are able to leave.
Students who have Saturday school due to an in-school suspension will do something a little bit different. Students are not allowed to talk unless spoken to by the administrator supervising the room, and depending on why the student received an in-school suspension, he or she may receive behavioral and reflective counseling. Similar to students with tardies or absences, they will also have a lot of time to get school work done or study for upcoming tests and quizzes.
In certain cases, a student might also have to attend Saturday school if they are failing one of their classes. These students will only have to stay at school for a minimum of two hours. During their time there, they will mainly focus on understanding the material being taught in the class they are failing. These students will also have to continue attending Saturday school until they are no longer failing.
Administration hopes that adding this new policy to next year’s schedule will help limit the number of unexcused absences and tardies, as well as promote good behavior and dedication to the classes each student takes at Charlotte Catholic.
