As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, Charlotte Catholic steps into one of the most competitive and electric times of the year: the spring sports season. Catholic provides a wide variety of sports during the spring season, including baseball, softball, men’s golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, mountain biking, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, and track and field.

For starters, the Charlotte Catholic baseball team, led by head coach Eddie Hull, has set some very high expectations for the season. Ranking number one in the Charlotte Observer’s sweet 16 baseball poll, they are looking to win their first state championship title. Senior shortstop Cooper Gornet said, “Although we have fallen short of the state championship the past few years I’ve been here, I think this year we have the best chance we’ve ever had to win it all.” Last year’s team lost in the second round the T.C. Roberson, who ended up winning the state championship for the third year in a row.

The men’s and women’s lacrosse seasons have just begun as well. The men’s team had tryouts on February 15th and 16th, while the women’s team had theirs on the 17th and 18th. Sophomore Wade Faulkner said, “I am excited that the season has finally started, and I can’t wait to win games and grow as a team.”

The golf team has tryouts from Monday, February 23rd to Wednesday, February 25th. This year’s returners have set similar goals to the baseball team: to win a state championship. Sophomore James Hoefing said, “I hope we can win a state championship as a team this year, but if not, my individual goal is to win a state championship myself.” Last year Senior Will Hartman won his second NCHSAA 4A state championship, but the team fell short.

Charlotte Catholic also offers mountain biking during the spring season. They practice at trail systems all across Charlotte on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and then they have lifts on Wednesday. The team has seven races throughout the season all over North Carolina. On Saturday, the mountain biking team practices the course, and on Sunday they have their race. Sophomore Colin Turner said, “My favorite part about the mountain biking season is that we are able to meet new friends from around the state and compete against each other on the race track.”

The track team had their first practice Thursday, February 19th. They practice five days a week at McMullen Creek Parkway and Ballantyne Ridge track. Many of the track members have set personal goals for themselves this season. Sophomore Jack Efthimiou said, “I want to run 4:35 in the mile and two minutes flat in the 800 meter.”

With a surplus of talent, drive, and anticipation across each program, Charlotte Catholic enters the spring season ready to compete, grow, and chase multiple championships on every field.
