SOTM: Marguerite’s Magnifique Crêpes
Junior Marguerite McPhillips is stealing the spotlight with her extraordinary baking skills and bubbly personality. Marguerite is the vice president of the French National Honor Society, so for the NFHS-sponsored teacher brunch she baked her famous crêpes. This year, I joined her and learned about how she got into making such delicious treats.
Marguerite used to live in the heart of Paris, France, minutes from the Eiffel Tower. She was born and raised in Florida, but it wasn’t until her move back to France that she started to pick up baking. Marguerite shared that she hopes to attend university in France. She “misses the culture and couldn’t see [herself] going to school in the U.S.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, most people in America started learning to make their own bread or pasta, but Marguerite started baking French treats. She made a lot of different baked goods, but she especially loved making crêpes because they were her favorite to eat.
Marguerite came over to my house, and as we started by portioning ingredients, we quickly realized that we lacked measuring cups. Luckily, Marguerite was so used to making crêpes that she could measure everything out by sight.
I had a great time due to Marguerite’s jokes, dances and singing. Marguerite is quite the multitasker. The entire time we were baking, she could not sit still. She would put some batter on the pan, then hit the griddy in my living room, all without burning a single crêpe.
On top of school and soccer, Marguerite still takes time to bake, either by herself or with her brothers. She is a great example of how to not only keep up with hobbies, but also excel while doing so. Though it is sad that Marguerite will be leaving the US for college, I am sure that she will spread her positive energy and yummy cuisine with everyone she meets.
