 Sisters are Slacking: Signless Sadies

Three weeks before Homecoming, most people would be looking for dates and outfits, but three weeks before CCHS’ Sadie Hawkins Dance, this isn’t the case. The Catholic Chronicle interviewed students from each grade about the differences between Homecoming and Sadies.

While most freshmen and sophomores are excited about the dance, most upperclassmen view Sadies as a joke and are not as enthusiastic. However, almost all of the people interviewed noted that they are attending the dance, and those that are not are sad to miss it.

As the dance approaches, lots of people are securing dates. For Homecoming, most guys make signs to win their dates, regardless if they are going as friends or as a couple. However, most girls are not returning the favor for Sadies.

Though some boys may believe most girls are heartless and incapable of a romantic gesture, they are just upset that they have to deal with all this.

Almost all girls who are in a relationship are asking their boyfriends with signs; however only a few of the girls going with a friend did the same. This is because Sadies is less formal.

Sadie’s signs are a great way to reflect one’s personality. The girls have an opportunity to be creative and make an impact. This year’s themes for signs include college logos, pop culture, sports, sweet treats, and hobbies.

As students get older, they tend to care less about the posters. While most girls participated in making signs as freshmen and sophomores, most juniors and seniors secured dates through texting.

Although lots of girls have decided not to make their own signs, most admit that back in the fall they received invitations from boys who made posters. Senior Ann Douglas O’Brien claims that “Sadies is much less serious,” and lots of girls agree with this.

For homecoming, dresses are bought months to weeks in advance, whereas for Sadies, most girls have not have not given any thought to what they might wear.

Homecoming might be more highly regarded because it marks the start of the new school year, or because it is seen as less work for the girls. Regardless, students look forward to the event and would be upset if it was cancelled.
