Scream (1996): A Captivating Horror Classic
Halloween is now upon us, which prompts the question: “Do you like scary movies?” Though this question may seem simple, true horror fans know this is really an iconic quote from the American murder mystery and slasher franchise, Scream.
Since its first movie, Scream (1996), the franchise has released five sequels and they have recently announced a sixth will be coming out in 2026. Nevertheless, it was the installment that inspired the franchise’s cult following which persists to this day.
Written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Wes Craven, Scream (1996) follows the protagonist, Sidney Prescott played by Neve Campbell, an ordinary teenager from a quiet California suburb. However, her ordinary life is in for a drastic change when a psychotic killer dressed in a black cloak and ghost mask is on the loose.
The plot of the movie begins with the brutal murder of one of Sidney's highschool classmates causing unrest and fear in her previously calm town. Sidney will have to evade the killer and make difficult decisions regarding who she can trust in order to survive and bring this murderer to justice.
This masterpiece of horror was highly acclaimed by audiences and critics after its release. Some of the movie’s most notable awards include an 84% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and being named Best Movie at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards.
