The science department at Charlotte Catholic introduced a new AP class for upcoming juniors and seniors. After taking Honors Chemistry or Advanced Chemistry in 10th grade, students typically placed into Honors Physics. However, beginning in the 2026-2027 school year,  AP Physics I will replace Honors Physics. Seniors can take this class as well.

The new AP Physics I course is based on algebra. It covers topics such as motion, forces, energy, momentum, rotation, fluids, and simple harmonic motion. Course prerequisites include completion of Honors Chemistry with a minimum grade of a B+, or Advanced Chemistry with an A. Students must be concurrently enrolled in Honors or Advanced Pre-calculus or have previously completed one of the courses.

Some students have expressed criticism regarding the current AP Physics course, noting its calculus-heavy content. As a result, the department decided to introduce AP Physics I in order to provide an option that emphasizes algebra rather than calculus. The new course will also move at a slower pace. The honors course currently covers 20 chapters whereas the AP Physics I next year will cover 11, allowing for deeper conceptual understanding.

The department also implemented the new AP Physics course so students can explore a wider variety of academic pathways. Next school year, they are also adding an Honors Nutrition course for students who are interested in a biology-focused track. Physics remains a strong option for students interested in chemistry, engineering, and other STEM-related fields.

Currently, Mrs. Madden teaches Honors and AP Physics C Mechanics, and she will teach both AP Physics classes next year. Mrs. Madden’s favorite part about teaching physics so far has been the hands-on lab experiences, which allow students to apply equations to real-world problems. She believes a common misconception about taking physics is that it is too hard. However, she said, “If a student studies and asks questions they will be able to understand and enjoy the course.”

In addition to the AP Physics I course, in the 2026-2027 school year, upcoming juniors and seniors have the option to take AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Physics C Mechanics, and AP Environmental Science. With the expansion of science course offerings, the school believes that students can pursue courses aligned with their interests and academic goals.
