One way Charlotte Catholic celebrates Catholic Schools Week is by hosting its annual basketball tournament in which the winner gets the honor of playing the teachers in a final championship game in front of the whole school. This year, homerooms are grouped by grade level, and were split up into four different brackets: the Freshman Bracket, Sophomore Bracket, Junior Bracket, and Senior Bracket.
To play in the 3v3 tournament, students needed to have three or more students on the team, with at least one girl. If a team did not have a girl, only two players could play on the court at once, which could result in a 2v3 or a 2v2.
As of January 29th, each bracket is down to the semifinals or finals. In the Freshman Bracket, Team Lee and Team Mojaver plan to play their final game on Friday, January 30th. In the Sophomore bracket, Team Queen will face off against Team Baker while Team Bick plays Team Crainer on Thursday, January 29th. Team Carrillo will match up against Team Burke, and Team Gbenyon will play Team Kennelly in the Junior Bracket. Lastly, Team Butler will compete against Team Cusack and Team Madden will face Team Morris in the semifinals of the Senior Bracket.
As the final games for each grade level grow nearer, each game has been seen getting more and more competitive. There have also been many students gathering around the gym to watch each game play out. Sophomore Jacob Wilson, who is not allowed to play in the tournament because he is on the JV basketball team said, “Although I wish I could play, it’s very entertaining and funny to watch everyone else participate that don’t play basketball competitively.”
Students still in the brackets also seem very excited about their next games. Sophomore Stone Johnson of Team Crainer along with Jimmy and Tommy Kelly, Anna Kerley, James Hoefling, Ryan Kalons, and Olivia Hayes said, “I was surprised that my team has gotten this far in the tournament, and hopefully we can continue to win.” Additionally, junior Luke Danser of Team Carrillo said, “We have a solid matchup next game, so I think if we win that one then we will have a good chance to win it all.”
The winning team of each grade will come together and form one squad that will play the teachers during the pep rally at the end of the day on Friday. The game will be split into 15 minute halves, and during halftime, one student from each grade will participate in a halftime tic-tac-toe game. The winner of the tic-tac-toe game earns their grade a free ooey-gooey at lunch.
