The Charlotte Catholic High School swim program has long been one of the school’s most successful and respected athletic teams. This year, the cougars continue to uphold that tradition, powered by a culture of support, discipline, and personal growth that sets them apart in the pool and beyond.

The cougars currently rank 10th in the state, 2nd in their conference, and 1st in the Western Region. Junior Sebastian Illueca feels that the team’s environment is the foundation of their success. “We cheer each other on, and we aren't competing against each other but competing against ourselves,” Sebastian said. “That’s what makes this team special.”

Junior Madi Hertzig, one of the program’s standout athletes, shares that view. “The team is really close and supportive,” Hertzig said. “Everyone has amazing sportsmanship and is always cheering on his or her teammates.” Their perspectives reflect a program built not only on talent, but also a shared commitment to lifting one another up. This quality has helped Charlotte Catholic remain a titan in North Carolina high school swimming.

The team's dedication has translated into major accomplishments. Junior Julian Malecki recently broke a school record by swimming the 100m backstroke in 53 seconds. Sebastian points to his first‑place finish in the 500m freestyle, a grueling event that rewards mental toughness as much as physical stamina, as his proudest achievement of the past three years.

Madi’s achievements extend to the national stage. Over the summer, she qualified for Junior Nationals, a meet reserved for swimmers who achieve time standards placing them among the top 1% in the country. “I got to travel to Irvine, California with my teammates to race some of the fastest swimmers in the country,” she said. “It was an incredible experience.”

Madi was also named an All‑American. She credits both Charlotte Catholic and her club program, MSA, for preparing her for the next chapter. “MSA has provided me the opportunity to swim at the Division 1 level and opened up opportunities for me to attend an elite institution,” Madi said. “Charlotte Catholic has prepared me academically to be successful when I get to college.”

At the center of this program’s success is Coach Claire Nicholls. Nicholls is not only head coach for the whole team, but she is also the Science Core Leader at Holy Trinity. When asked about her career, she said, “I love what I do more than anything; we have a great team of kids in and out of the classroom. I wouldn’t want it any other way."

With athletes like Sebastian and Madi setting the tone, the cougars look poised to continue their winning tradition next season. Their stories highlight what makes the program exceptional: a blend of talent, teamwork, and a shared commitment to excellence that extends far beyond the pool.

As the season continues, Charlotte Catholic’s swimmers remain focused on improving, supporting their teammates, and carrying forward a legacy that has become a defining part of the school’s athletic identity.
