The Charlotte Catholic Comedy Club (CCCC) recently competed in the annual “Carolina Comedy Cup.” Schools from both North and South Carolina assembled their funniest students in an attempt to bring home the title of funniest school in the Carolinas. The CCCC came and conquered, bringing home the revered Comedy Cup.
The competition took place from March 21-23 in the Bojangles Coliseum. Close to 10,000 people attended their event, and the audience was very influential in the judging process. Attendees were encouraged to laugh as much as they could in order to help the judges rank comedy teams.
The comedy club is headed by teacher and former basketball coach Sergio Asaro who is known schoolwide for his wit and animated nature. Mr. Asaro and the members of his club held daily meetings for the duration of February and March in order to prepare for the event. Representing Charlotte Catholic in the Comedy Cup were Padraig McPhillips and Danny Kelly.
Each contestant was required to present a standup comedy routine as well as their best dad jokes. Jokes were judged based on creativity, presentation, and the reactions of both the audience and judges.
When reflecting back on the event, Danny said, “When I got on that stage, it was just me and the judges and I did what I do best.” He and Padraig both crushed their standup routine, earning numerous outbursts of laughter from both the audience and judges.
Padraig and Danny both agreed that their favorite part was the dad jokes. Padraig said, “I have one joke that never fails me: What do you call a dog who meditates? —Aware wolf.” Danny believes the joke that won him the competition was: “How do you make Budweiser? You send him to school.” Both of them said that they researched and invented hundreds of dad jokes prior to the competition. “They put in so many hours perfecting their routines,” Mr. Asaro said. “I couldn’t be prouder.”
Out of the 300 schools that attended the event, Charlotte Catholic came out on top, with Danny and Padraig scoring an average score of 9.7 out of 10. When presenting their awards, the judges congratulated them on their witty jokes and perfect delivery. Afterwards, the judges approached both of them and encouraged them to pursue careers in comedy.
Mr. Asaro has already proposed the addition of a comedy class to Charlotte Catholic for the 2025-26 school year. He said, “Comedy is definitely an art. I think it’s important that the new generation learn how to make others laugh.” The CCCC can definitely expect an invite back to the Comedy Cup next year.
