Eight Charlotte Catholic student athletes signed to a variety of schools on February 4th for National Signing Day. All the work that these athletes put in has paid off and their success was put on display in front of their friends, family, and the Charlotte Catholic community.
Two athletes committed for soccer. Women's soccer player Margueritte McPhillips signed with Connecticut College. Connecticut College is a division three college that competes in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Men’s soccer player Zach Deblitz signed with Hampden-Sydney College. Hampden-Sydney is a division three college in Virginia. Last season, their men’s soccer team returned to the national rankings and made a deep postseason run.
The only cross country and track athlete to sign was Duncan Smith. He committed to Washington and Lee University, which is a division three school located in Lexington, Virginia. This year, the Washington and Lee Track and Field team won their first conference title since 2009.
The football team stood out the most at signing day with five athletes signing. Dom Basrawala signed with the Air Force Academy. Carter Garnett signed with John Hopkins University. Lukas Lupinski signed with Columbia University. Caden O’Neill signed with Furman University. Finally, the football team’s captain Keanen Teeter signed with Lenoir-Rhyne University. All of the football commits led the Cougars’ standout defense this season. They allowed an average of only 15.5 points per game throughout the whole season.

Athletic Director Kevin Christmas opened the ceremony with remarks about these athletes. He shared how proud he and the entire Charlotte Catholic community were of each athlete for their commitment and dedication to the Charlotte Catholic athletics program.
The college landscape is constantly changing as the transfer portal continues to dominate college athletics. Coach Christmas remarked how difficult it is to play sports in college nowadays. Not only are the athletes competing with other high schoolers in their class for a roster spot, but they also have to compete with transfer portal athletes who already have years of experience in college athletics. Last season, over 10,500 football players entered the transfer portal over all NCAA divisions. This makes these athletes’ accomplishments even more remarkable.
As these Cougars enter the next stages of their athletic careers, Charlotte Catholic is thankful to have been a small part of their journey. The entire Charlotte Catholic community wishes these athletes the best of luck in their future endeavors.
