CCHS Ushers In New Mass Uniforms
CCHS celebrated the first school mass of the year with a brand new look for the students. With the addition of mass once a week, Principal Lori Phillips explained the switch to these new mass uniforms and the benefits they bring to the student profile.
On Mass days, the girls wear a blue or white Oxford blouse with a pleated skirt. The boys wear khaki or navy pants with a CCHS tie.
Last September, a special committee was formed after hearing the parents' interest in formal uniforms for daily wear. Teachers, administration, and parents believe wearing the new uniforms on Mass days would be the most appropriate way to transition to a new uniform policy.
Mrs. Phillips believes these uniforms also create a sense of unity in the student body. She believes that the addition of Mass once a week gives students the opportunity to show their reverence during liturgy.
This year, CCHS switched uniform brands from Lands’ End to FlynnO’Hara. Color fading in Lands’ End uniform pants had caused problems in the past. Mrs. Phillips mentions how this change will benefit the students with higher quality uniforms.
In addition, FlynnO’Hara provided the school with a variety of skirt styles and colors for the girls' new Mass uniforms. Mrs. Phillips said that the idea was to “go with a plaid that no one else would have.”
Regarding this new policy, Mrs. Phillips is interested in students' inputs about what they want to see in uniforms in the future. She hopes to raise the student image with these uniforms and build on them. “When you dress for success you tend to succeed,” Mrs. Phillips noted, explaining why Catholic school students wear uniforms.
Some students have strong opinions regarding the new uniforms. Junior Ella Lengers explained how “the mass uniforms aren't the comfiest” and are “super stiff. However, she believes that they will get softer over time. Additionally, Ella remarked how the skirts are “more feminine than pants” and the “design definitely stands out.”
When asked about the style of these uniforms, senior Nicole Paz mentioned how she thought they looked “very put together.” Nicole also stated how the color patterns on the skirt complement each other.
Junior Ross Midura spoke about the men’s mass uniform and mentioned that it had “decent material” and didn’t feel “too tight.” However, Ross explained that the “pants are slightly uncomfortable.”
Although these new mass uniforms may take students some time to get used to, Mrs. Phillips believes that it will benefit the student profile in the future.
