Acing Out The Season

The ‘24-’25 Charlotte Catholic Women's Varsity tennis season has officially come to an end. This team consisted of 12 players with Ella Davis, Carla Perezgrovas, Maddie McWilliams, Maria Hondros, Sofia Fusco, and Anna Groccia in the starting line-up. This group worked together to achieve a strong 20-4 record, finishing second in the Southwestern 4A Conference.

During the matchup against Charlotte Latin, the team’s first challenge of the season, players gathered on the courts and said their pregame prayers and routine “Cougars on 3” chant to prepare themselves for the tough match ahead. The team was able to power through, and after a three-hour match the girls came off the court with a convincing 6-3 victory.

With a major win under their belts, girls looked forward to their next big challenge: Country Day. Once the matches began, players in the stands cheered as they watched their teammates fight through tough matches. Although the Cougars came up short with a 4-5 loss, the team felt that this was one of the most memorable matches of the season. Junior Carla Perezgrovas mentioned that this match was her favorite because “it was one of the most competitive of the season and everyone supported each other the best there.”

The team continued their season, winning matches against Butler, East Meck, Marvin Ridge, and South Meck but were eventually stopped by conference rival Providence. However, the girls remained positive and worked hard to achieve an eight-match winning streak going into Dual-Team playoffs.

Prior to the first dual-team match, Coach Cabana gave the team an inspirational pep talk and reminded the team of the importance of having fun.

The teams first two rounds of dual teams against Northern Guildford (Greensboro) and Davie County (Mocksville) ended in complete 9-0 sweeps.

Their third round of dual-teams saw the Cougars traveling to Greensboro to face Page High School. The girls had competitive games throughout their doubles and singles matches but kept their team spirit and positivity high. Ultimately the Cougars triumphed over Page with a 5-3 win and were able to move onto the fourth round of dual-teams, the NCHSAA 4A regional semifinal round.

Going into the 4th round, the girls knew they had a tough rematch ahead  against Providence. Once the matches began, the team came together to cheer on one another as they made the most of this time together. Freshman Maria Hondros said she looked forward to “trying [her] best and having fun, even if it was the team's last match.”

Although CCHS lost this match 1-5, the team came together to cheer on the final match in which senior Sofia Fusco closed out her senior season with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Once the matches ended, the girls returned onto the courts to commemorate their 20-4 season record and celebrated their Elite-8 playoff finish. Before walking off the courts, the girls gathered for their final “Cougars On 3” chant of the year.

Remarking on the end of the season, Coach Cabana emphasized how much she “enjoyed watching the team unite and witnessing the support and encouragement that the players gave to one another.” Four members of the team, Ella Davis, Maddie McWilliams, Sofia Fusco, and Carla Perezgrovas, were also named to the Southwest 4A All-Conference Team.

The women's varsity tennis team worked hard to achieve their 20-4 season record, and they made lasting memories. Coach Cabana and the girls look forward to another successful season as they continue to grow each year as a team.
